Title: 2019 STAR Events, Activities, Etc
Post by: Tomas on May 07, 2019, 10:15:56 AM

So, as far as I can determine... the only things included in the basic price of admission is the Wednesday night banquet dinner and the availability of Honda demo rides.  The lunch ride, raffle tickets, T-shirts, etc are extra.  Is there ANYTHING ELSE to look forward to at this event other than heading off somewhere on your own to ride?

Free seminars on Tuesday evening.

Venders will have booths open all evenings, and some in the mornings.

Members meeting is Monday evening....please plan to attend.....and most awards will be given out then.

Door prizes given out/picked up every day.

Main door prizes and raffle prizes given out at the Banquet on Wednesday.

Diane and Dennis have more details, but I know that they are working on setting up a Saturday evening pub crawl (transportation provided) in the downtown.  Several breweries and bars located there.

Possibly will have tours of the Bristol Motor Speedway set up for the group.  I know they offer them, but I’m not sure if we can get a group to do it, or it’s on your own.

Not sure yet what the local supporting dealer may be doing for us, but it’s not uncommon for them to do an open house for these events.

But really it IS the riding that is the MAIN attraction for most attendees, is it not?

And...you don’t have to ride “on your own”.  There is always little groups going out that can take on an extra rider.  We even have sign-up sheets so that groups can get formed easily.  We just don’t do an “everyone line up and follow the leader” HUGE GROUP rides.

Yep MSTA rallies are not your traditional biker/motorcycle rally full of 100 bike group rides. I know we've had first times show up who were surprised we don't do that.

Don't want to ride alone, use the sign up sheets, talk to others (at meals, in the parking lot in evenings, etc.) about riding and looking for others to join with. Just understand not everybody will be willing to include people in their ride, they may already have a large group or have other legitimate reasons. Don't take it personally if somebody says no, keep trying, the earlier (night before) the better.

Most things are extras rather than included in the event price because not everybody does everything. I think that is better than charging a higher price to include everything.

The best benefit of going to STAR (for me) is the camaraderie and meeting and making new friends of like mind. And there's a whole lot of people in the MSTA from Florida so you could solidify or make new connections there. For me, the other big attraction of STAR is going somewhere I don't normally ride and doing just that - plus the adventure of routing there and back. Since I live in Michigan, it's been a great trip every time I've gone (although that is only twice, VT & WI.) Come and give it a shot, I don't think you'll regret it.

The first STAR for us was in Springdale, AR a few years ago, then 2017 in Colorado Springs.  The 3rd was last year in La Crosse, as the Coordinator.  We met many new people the first year, and some we only see or talk to at STAR, some we keep in touch with through out the year.  And we enjoyed the the whole event.  We have been MSTA members since 2003 and wish we had attended long ago.  Found out what we were missing all these years.

The preliminary schedule is pretty set, and it won’t vary much from what we have seen at past STARS.  There is not a whole lot “scheduled”for most days because that’s the way the membership seems to want it, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do.  The area (known as the TriCity area) offers a lot to do.  We even have one of the regional tourism groups attending and presenting information on things to do in the area.  There are plenty of websites to look at for information and there will be plenty of information on-site too.  Finding stuff to do won’t be the problem, finding enough time to do all that you want to do, may be.

Looking for some folks to team up on the ADV routes and someone that knows the DS route.  I've done some gnarly stuff (single track) on the AT and would like to get a sense on how challenging the DS route is?

The thread just above this one gives all the routes and descriptions.  Most of the them appear to be big bike friendly, but it reads like one of them is definitely not!

Yea, I have the routes, I’m looking for folks interested in both the ADV and DS, that knows them.

Vendors really like it if you hang around the hotel all-day, drink beer, polish your bike, and see what they have to sell you.  Unfortunately for them, we're usually out riding so the hotel is empty during the day.  :-)

Sorry if I'm oblivious, but what is the scoop on the downtown shuttle?  Is it just for the Poker Walk?

No...it’s set up to shuttle people back and forth from the hotel to the downtown area Saturday and Sunday evenings, and to the Pinnacle Shopping area during the day on Monday.  You don’t have to participate in the Poker Walk to use it.

I’m pretty sure that the cost of this is being covered by the Chamber of Commerce or the local tourism group for Bristol.  The hotel is a conference center, but I’m not sure it has its own shuttle.

Another Vendor, who was a vendor for the first time at STAR in La Crosse will be returning:
HUB: Heads Up Braking Display.

Also, in addition to the 2019 STAR
T-shirts, you can purchase a new style (not tri-fold) hat and super comfortable light weight neck wraps. Supplies are limited!

Vendors who understand our event, like No-Mar, do just fine. Those expecting a captive audience all day not so much.

But that's different from your initial "we don't have vendors". They may not be traditional vendors, just like our group rides are not traditional biker group rides (parades of 50-100 bikes or more).

The Rhododendron should be in full bloom this weekend. However beware there will be lots of traffic and the weather is always different up on Roan Mountain.

AH yes, recall at Tri-STAR one year heading up Roan Mountain, then back down the other side since it was raining as we ascended. Later the same day thing we doubled back that way and finally stopped to look around. The first time I stopped after going thru a few times in sketchy weather.

The rhododendron there are pretty spectacular.
