Curt Chevlen injured in crash
« on: June 24, 2018, 10:03:07 PM »

Long time Ohio MSTA member Curt Chevlen has had a crash and is severely injured.

From Howard Baumwell:

"Saturday afternoon a little after 4:00 p.m. Curt was on his scooter about a mile or two from his home when he was t-boned by someone coming out of side street. He was conscious at the scene and was rushed to Grant Medical Center where he is currently in ICU.
He can move his extremities and has no internal injuries, but suffered other significant injuries.  He had a C2 burst which is the priority injury and he is supposed to have surgery today or tomorrow. Curt also has an orbital fracture, clavicle fracture, a number of rib fractures, and multiple thoracic fractures.
I will let you know more as I get more information."

Most worrying, of course, are the neck and back injuries.  I will pass on any info as soon as I can.

Oh no!  This is terrible news!  Best wishes for his recovery.

For you guys thst don’t know him, Curt is one really good dude.  Great sense of dry humor and always upbeat.  Lots of fun to have around.

Howard...if there is anything I can do, just let me know!  In the meantime prayers and positive thoughts headed his way.

I don't know Curt, but I am praying for a good recovery.  There just seems to be way too many people that do not look for cycles, or as in my case several years ago, think the road is for cars, not motorcycles.  I was lucky it happened near an intersection as we both were slowing for the stop light and he side swiped me.  Then he told the Police he was in the Right, and the road is for cars not cycles.

Eventually his arguing got this 80+ year old hauled in for DWI, when they were about to send him on his way, if he had not argued so much.  $5,000.00+ damage to cycle, no injuries to me.  Helmet had scratches and got replaced.   I was fortunate, as he was about to run over me, because I was in his way.

Now I watch very good when I see someone that may not like cycles.

This is such a bummer! I spoke with Howard last night and the way it sounds Curt is lucky to still be with us. Damn!!!
I met and road with Howard and Curt back in the late 80’s in Columbus! Curt is one of those guys who would do anything for his friends. Great sense of humor.

Curt I’m sending my best! ❤️ Love Ya Brother!

I just heard from Howard. Curt has surgery today. All went well... that’s all I know. I assume it was for the C2 injury.

I also don't know Curt but am sending up prayers and good thoughts for a speedy recovery. From another comment I agree that Curt is lucky to still be with us. My father was in a car accident and suffered damage to his C1 & C2 and for those not in the know, they are the top to vertebrae where your head sits on the spine. They allow your head to move up and down and pivot left and right. Injuries to these two vertebrae are often fatal. Glad he came out of surgery okay, but he likely has a long road to recovery. Positive thoughts all around for him, his family, and his friends.

I just got this email from Howard regarding Curt. This sounds good... well an improvement.

Curt had surgery on his neck yesterday and the surgery went well. They also took him off the ventilator yesterday. He is in ICU and as he mends they will move him to a regular bed and then on to a rehab facility. Unknown as of yet as to any further surgery.

I went to see him today and he knew that his wife Marty was there and he knew I was there via some limited talking. But he was also in a tremendous amount of pain and became quite agitated at times.

I asked Marty about visitors and she said not just yet. I will check back with her later this week and let you know if that changes. I passed along well wishes from his MSTA family and it was appreciated.  He has a long way to go, but I think he cleared some major hurdles in the last two days.

Brick - if you do not mind, could you post the above to the forum. If I missed someone in this chain, please pass this email along.

Howard

Wow very shocked to hear this, praying that Curt can make a full recovery. He's one of the guys I've gotten to know better over the last 5-10 years, often talking at Tri-STAR, Mail Pouch and other events.

Get well Curt.
