That really does look good and it sounds like they didn’t totally neuter it. However I’m not a Kawasaki green fan... they really need to offer it in the Root beer color!

Pretty sure I was doing that as a toddler before Mazda adopted the motto.  Oh wait, maybe that was VROOM VROOM :)

Just my reaction when I looked at the bike, looked like it goes well.

When I was little, it was UUUUUUUHH-DENNNNNNNNN- based on the sound you get when you rev up and back off an engine with open exhaust.

I worked with Mazda MX-5 Cup for 8 years, so that is where I got the ZOOM ZOOM.  That was all they talked about, going back to the rotary days of Mazda.


But, talking about engine sounds,  has anyone heard of this sound,  "WHOOMAH"?


It came about by a few guys in a garage in Omaha, NE, about 25 years ago.  They were working on their American Sedan Mustang for SCCA Racing, with an open exhaust.  The story goes that these guys were over lubricated, and when they blipped the throttle, they heard the sound of WHOOMAH.  This started a WHOOMAH Club and they handed out stickers also, that said, you guessed it,  WHOOMAH.  They even sold T-Shirts, on the website.


I crewed on an AS Mustang in those days and had many stickers and a T-Shirt.


Now if someone comes out with that sound on a touring bike, I may have to buy it.

As a recipient of ridicule, teasing, jokes, friendly harassment and more of my quite as a mouse GL1800 Goldwing when I had one, I had rebuttal. Usually it was the loud pipe saves lives co-workers of mine that would ask if it was running etc.  I just told them they couldn't catch me with their tractors if they had to and I would just WHOOOOSSSHH!!! them into the weeds as I passed them.

You were a lot faster back then ;)

Coming off a 98 VFR (still have it) with an aftermarket pipe getting on a Triumph Sprint ST (stock pipe0 the engine sound (or lack there of) was strange. Sounded a bit like a turbine when I got it up in the revs.

Knew a guy a while back with a GL1500 with a cutout. When he opened it up, it sounded like a race-ready 911.

I do, they go boing-boing-biong, Mazda engines go hmmmmmmmm!!  Footnote, they only have one rotary engine left and still gets poor milage and wears rotor seals. Neat concept though. Many RX7 & 8's now sport small block V8's or V6's.

I was wondering if they still had any rotary engine vehicles. I know there were lots of problems with them and the seals. But wondering is as far as I got. Thanks for the info Tom.

The last rotary for Mazda was a few years ago in the RX-8.  But, I have heard that it may come back again.
They had pretty much an unlimited rpm.  I know a friend that put a stock Mazda truck rotary in a autocross car, the truck in those days was bigger, he added a larger 4 barrel carb and disconnected the rev limiter.  It would run over 10,000 rpm.  Now keep in mind, the crank was at 10,000, but the tripod unit, which is the piston in a normal engine, only runs at 1/3 of the speed, and creates 3 sparks per crank revolution.



For those of us in the snow country, that know what a snowmobile is, Arctic Cat had a Wankle rotary in the late 60's-early 70's.  It was discontinued for excessive fuel consumption, even with a very small carb.  But, if you put on a carb the same as some similar size engines, you had a lot of power, if you could make it to the gas station in time.  The bad part was in those days, there was no oil injection either.  So, if you ran low on gas, you pulled into a gas station, added gas, then took out your can of oil, and added as needed for the correct ratio, to the tank.  When done, lift the back of the sled and shake it to mix the oil/gas.

During the '90's when IMSA (prototype sports cars) was prosperous Mazda had a 4 rotor wankle in their car. It was nothing short of amazing, exhaust note sounding like a jet's thrust, for lack of a better description. The '90's were also the best of times for AMA super bike racing too. TM

Here are my 2 previously owned Mazda RX7's with rotary engines. Lots of fun, as the engines had a sporty character, liked to rev like a 2 stroke.
