Title: Starter bike for my 20 year old daughter
Post by: brider on March 22, 2018, 07:22:36 PM
I'm such a hypocrite.  I hate to say this but my daughter is bugging me to buy her first street bike and I'm not excited about it.  With that said I thought I would ask here first.  Anyone got a good starter bike for sale?

How ironic that this would happen when you don't have a bike for sale.  ;D

I just acquired my first truly "new" bike, a 2017 Honda CB300F ABS that I think would be a great newbie bike (only bike I've ever gotten with 0 miles on the odometer). But it's not for sale as I'm going to enjoy riding it, I suspect, for a long time and over a lot of miles. If all of my bikes in the garage were as easy to move around as the CB, I'd be tickled.

I have my 1999 Suzuki SV650 that I purchased from Jim and Ginny LaPoint some years ago. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180324/b28ea7e580767270bdb1e6eac556a042.jpg)
It’s really too nice to be a beginner bike as I think of a beginner bike as being one that’s going to be dropped a few times. I’ve been holding on to this bike because it’s too good to give away for what the book value is but no one probably would give me what I think it’s worth. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this bike ... it’s just that I also own an FJ-09 and a Super Tenere and I alway go to them instead of the SV.

I read an article a while back on picking a first bike, and the primary feature to this writer was the head to right-hand interface. If they are coordinated, a beginner can ride most anything. Being somewhat familiar with the SV, I'd say it's an easy interface to make. An SV can be an entertaining ride for anyone from beginner to experienced rider for a long time.

She has her eye on the Ninja 250 or CBR 250.  I can't talk her into a naked beater bike for a season.  She is set to take the MSF in early May so we will see how things go.

EX500s and CB500s seem like reasonable options too.

Not for sale, but I just recently acquired a 2017 Honda CB300F. Not much in the way of bodywork (to damage in the inevitable tip over), 286cc fuel-injected water-cooled counter-balanced engine, ABS. It's a smooth runner that feels incredibly light when I'm moving it around in the garage. Feels appropriately stable on the road (in the 200 or so miles I've put on it). I think I like it, and a newbie could as well.

The Ninja 250 is fun, but it won't leave the driveway under 7000 rpm.  I don't know if the Ninja 300 has more torque.

Here's a source for beginner's bikes:

We scored a 2011 CBR250R today with a almost brand Bluetooth equipment helmet and a GPS for 2100.  MSF first week of May.  What I like best is it has FI and had never been down in 6k miles.

Hmmm... what does it mean that it has Fl?

More like good "steal". Congrats and may she enjoy many years and miles of enjoyment in the saddle.

Hopefully she won't pick up bad habits from pops ;)

Must be so cool to share this passion with your kids.

Honestly I was putting up some roadblocks the last year. Last week she clears all the hurdles and really left me no choice.  She reminded me that she is now 20 and serving her country so she would do this with me or with out me.  I could have said go right ahead as that would have stalled her for a while since her funds were pretty low but there I thought about me at 20 lurking those young ladies on the back of my KZ900 going way to fast without any gear.  At that point I decided I would be well served to put her at the handle bars instead of some fool.
I agreed to split the cost of the first bike and buy that first helmet and riding gear.  As we all know that's more important and almost as expensive but well worth it.

I'm count on all
my MSTA family to help me influence her if she decides this is a passion for her.  Tosh, Jon and Glen have already stepped up and know more of you will if I get her to some rides along the way.  Let the journey begin!

It's a blessing and a curse.  A blessing because it's something you can share, but it's a curse because it leads to never ending worry.  Used to be that I was always looking in my rearview mirrors to make sure he made it through the curves with no problem.  Now I am always looking ahead and hoping that he will wait for me, or worrying that I am holding him up.  :)

Wow, very good words Pat. But let me assure you, it's also a curse when riding with siblings (I've done so with 3 of my 6). That looking in the mirrors thing is so right on, and the worst part is the time I looked in the mirrors and the brother wasn't there. Stomach in throat, yes he crashed. But the adventures continued.

Some great stuff posted here... I remember the many days when Teresa used to ride on the back of my CB900F. We would go up to Delphos to visit Grandma. At a stop her helmet would clunk into mine. I knew she had again fallen asleep. ❤️ I loved those rides and the time we spent together. She is now 40, married and living in San Francisco. I look fondly on those days gone... enjoy your time! ❤️

For those wondering, no it wasn't me :)

Most of the people I ride/travel with regularly are as close to me as my brothers, I'd do anything for them.

Like slowing down to check out the car you're passing, or leaving your turn signal on for miles?  Or did you have cigars and Keystone Light in mind?  ;-)

Ninja 300 has a much lower seat height, and just enough more power to make them a bit funner (and perhaps easier) to ride
brand new carryover ones can still be had for sub $4k........... which is about what the used market is still asking

But I have customers on Ninja 250 and CBR250's with 30,000- 40,000 and even 60,000 miles on them and they enjoy them immensely with just basic maintenance and you can find used Ninja 250's for sub 2k with low miles in good condition, and they maintain that value pretty well- if kept up.

I would look at seat height and reach for ease of use before looking at asthetics, but she is going to have to like it visually too to want to ride it...

Sounds like you got yourself a decent deal on that CBR250..... Is the helmet the correct size for her..... very important consideration

We lucked out on the gear.  Helmet was a spot on fit and had been used about 50 miles total but I'm add a brand new one and a good pair of riding pants.  20 year old female riders have to look good in their gear you know!    Thanks to Tosh and the PO she already has a 3 good riding jackets.  A trip to iron pony and the rest is in place.  Now if we could just get some decent riding weather to start honing those skills.  It's 21 degrees here this AM.  Come on Spring we know you are out there...

Hey Bill, Yoshimura makes some frame sliders for that little bike.  (I remember wiping the tears from the cheeks of my 16 year old daughter when she skinned up her first scooter).  I made her get back on it, and she is now a very good rider at 22.

We just got snowed on once again yesterday and last night. Saw a few cars in the ditch this am........ it was about 19* here but we have since warmed to above freezing

But we just went out and purchased an old 98 Yamaha Seca II for the better half to start riding again after a 2 year absence (crashed her bike and isn't sure she wants to continue riding after her 21 day hospital stay and broken pelvis)
So we found this and if nothing else she tries it and doesn't want to ride anymore or she tries it and likes riding but not the bike and we move it forward to someone else, or she really likes the bike and riding again
about 35,000 miles on it and the suspension is so soft it sags a couple inches and she can easily flat foot it and then some. Boosted her confidence immediately since she is height challenged
