It is winter time and in most of the country we have had a wide variety of weather. PSM or parked motorcycle syndrome is prevalent. But for the diehard rider who is not stuck with snow or sheet ice on the ground, modern warm clothing and heated gear makes riding possible. But even in those conditions your tire’s coefficient of friction on uncertain ground can degrade and your armor upgrade will be worth its weight in gold.

This month’s STAReview addresses the safety aspects of winter riding and showcases some added riding protection and electrical monitoring to keep an eye on the current draw from that gear. Winter riding provides brisk air that clears your head, or some may say freezes your stressful thoughts. Either way it provides a way of enjoying a time away from the daily grind and rejuvenates you. In many parts of the country drivers are not used to inclement weather and are more of a hazard, so add some distance between you and the vehicle(s) in front, and extra caution on your ride. It is a time of the year where extra caution is the better part of valor.

This is a special month as we are blessed to add two new members to the STAReview magazine staff. Michigan’s Pedro Gregorio is our new Feature Editor. He will be editing the previews and MSTA sanctioned and Just for Fun features. He comes to us a very talented writer from Midwestmotorcycle.com. Pedro provides us his first travelogue on “Hairpins, Tunnels and Spandex: Riding the German and Austrian Alps” for this issue of STAReview.

The second addition to our staff is Florida’s James T. Parks who is coming in as a Contributing Editor. James is a highly acclaimed photo-journalist who has been at RoadRUNNER Motorcycle Touring & Travel magazine since 2003. His first article for STAReview is the “Risks of Winter Riding.

Georgia’s Doug Westly gives us a nice travelogue on his and wife Becky’s “Southern California Fun” tour on the Honda CTX700N and
NC700X. Pennsylvania’s Bill Thom and clan provide you a multi-prospective look at “Why Consider a Sidecar Rig.” The featured State Director is Oklahoma’s Denise Dickenson. This month’s Member Profile is Texas’ Judi Rowe. Safe Money showcases Québec, Canada’s Raymond Cadieux, giving us an in-depth history of the 2005 Kawasaki Concours. In Safety Strategies, Doug Westly teaches lessons to heed in “Winter Riding.”

This month’s road test is the 2014 KTM 1190 Adventure R, the new adventure bike that incorporates the modified 1190cc RC8 sport bike engine into a handle anything travel (enduro performance) package. The RT-Quick Look is the new Indian Chief Chieftain from Polaris Industries, Inc. This is a high tech cruiser with old school American classic design charm

There are two product tests in this issue. The first is the TF5/6 armor upgrade to the AEROstich stealth suit providing the rider superior crash and wind blast protection. The second is the Clearwater Voltage Sentry (CVS) that provides a quick visual, always on, multicolor indication of your battery voltage; a must with heated winter gear and additional lights.

To showcase your stories and events in STAReview, email me your articles, and high resolution photos, with the best in portrait mode. Showcase your treasured 2011-2014 motorcycle (Sweet Rides), or 2006 and older motorcycle (Safe Money). I will provide you full editorial support. The embedded hyperlinks will link you to websites for travel planning information, and bikes and accessories to lust over without leaving your digital copy of the magazine. I want YOU to be the star in STAReview! So kick back with a cool one and enjoy this issue.
