Title: Find Me (new) Spot
Post by: Woovis on March 31, 2014, 08:57:51 PM
Hey all,

Noted that the annual service for my SPOT (gen 1) device is about to happen, so was quickly looking around for any deals on the new gen 3 SPOT device and/or any discounts for the services.

In the not so distant past there were offers of free tracking ($50) with the purchase/activation of a new device, and I think when I got my original unit it was free service or free hardware that first year from the AMA.

Not finding much of anything out there right now, has anyone seen any deals on SPOT?

I'm doing the same thing as my Gen1 bounced 15 feet in the air then landed under a tractor trailer tire! The $50 discount was offered to current SPOT owners last fall but I haven't seen one since. -JEP-

Still haven't found anything, so might turn to looking for a RAM mount for a gen 1...

I have a Gen1 RAM mount.
I'll send it to you but it will cost you a beer at STAR! -JEP-

Deal Jim!

I'm guessing though it's that mount that let your SPOT jump off?   :o

Hmmmmmmm...

You might want to take a look at this http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Personal-Locator-Beacon-Reviews
The ACR ResQlink 406 doesn't require a service but but has higher initial cost.  If you do some digging on Spot, you will discover it isn't as reliable as their marketing makes it out to be.

YMMV

These are just a few of both positive and negative experiences with SPOT.  Bottom line is the best SOS device is a riding buddy.
